Nikola Šubić Zrinjski

Nikola Šubić Zrinjski

Ivan pl. Zajc's Croatian national opera, Nikola Šubić Zrinjski, along with Gotovac's Ero the Joker, are among the most cherished domestic musical stage works. Since its premiere in Zagreb in 1876, the opera has held a special place in Croatian culture.

Based on the historical event from the 16th century, when the heroic death of Nikola Šubić Zrinjski and his crew thwarted the Turkish campaign towards Vienna, the opera has become more than just another title. Its musical and dramaturgical values are indisputable, and the work achieved exceptional success even at its premiere. The moving oath of the heroes of Siget and the famous chorus 'U boj!' (To battle!) caused particular excitement.

Zajc's signature style is recognisable in the nuanced portrayal of two opposing worlds. In addition to the historical figures of Zrinjski and Sultan Suleiman, he also created the important female characters of Eva and Jelena.
