"We did not build this building with the empty intention of entertaining the people; no, our intention was guided and encouraged by the sublime purpose of erecting a cultural temple where the people, especially our younger generation, would learn how to love their homeland and fulfill their civic duties..." With these words, the mayor of Split, Dr. Gajo Bulat, officially opened the new building of the Municipal Theater on May 6th, 1893, in the square that would later be named after him, one of the most representative in this part of Europe at the time.
